is a Registered Piano Technician?
Piano Technicians are piano tuner-technicians who have passed
three rigorous examinations that are held by the Piano Technicians
Guild Inc. The first examination is a written exam which is used
to assess general knowledge of pianos. The second examination
is a "hands on" regulation and repair test to assess
general skills of craftsmanship on upright and grand pianos. The
third examination is the tuning exam. In all of these examinations,
a standard of 80 percent must be achieved to become a Registered
Piano Technician with the Piano
Technicians Guild, Inc.
Of course, the best way to investigate any piano is to simply
hire a Registered Piano Technician. There are two excellent books
on how to buy a piano. One is called "The
Piano Book". The other is the "Piano
Buyers Guide" by Larry Fine.
often should my piano be tuned?
Most manufacturers suggest that all pianos be tuned at least 3
to 4 times a year when they are new and 1 or 2 times per year
after that. Sadly, only a very small number of pianos receive
regular attention. Many children play on pianos that are horribly
out of tune or pianos that have major technical problems. A few
kids will tolerate sub standard pianos but many will just give
up and quit.
The Piano Technicians Guild Home Page has a lot of resources for
Piano Teachers including lesson plans and teaching tools. Look
